Hello Reba

Maggie had her foal on Monday. A RED filly that they are calling Reba. Formal name TBD. I got to see her tonight and she is redder than Ms. Echo. They had checked Maggie, gone to get something, came back about 1/2 hour later and the filly was nearly on her feet and already cleaned up. She is a big girl.
Mom & I also got to see Sammy & Sally out playing tonight. I thought it was noisy when the cats got the ZOOM!s. Such fun watching them play and buck and run. Echo & Ellie were watching too.
So, Echo went to New Bolton yesterday because of her lameness and we found something. She has a bone chip in her fetlock (the joint just above the hoof). Dede thinks that it may have led to her suspensory problem but since she didn't block sound until the suspensory was numbed they may have missed the fetlock ... she did improve when the fetlock blocked IIRC but that was about 4 years ago. When Xpioti called her 'stubborn' for not wanting to go. Anytime Ms. Echo doesn't have get up and go, it is highly likely to be a real problem.
We can retire her, give her injections to make her feel a bit better (and in an ideal world have the chip fuse to the bone), or have it removed arthroscopically. We have decided on the surgery (gulp, this is NOT cheap) and with luck, she may become riding sound again. If we aren't lucky, she will at least feel a LOT better.
Where the chip is, it is 'floating' near the joint and when it shifts into the joint itself, it HURTS, and when it shifts away from the joint, it is probably achy (and because it is moving around, will manifest different ways).
According to what I have been told, when they blocked the joint, she went sound (which means her shoulder is currently fine). I can verify that there is nothing wrong with her appetite. If you have any positive thoughts to spare, send them towards Echo. They will probably take her up on the 16th. Hopefully she will be back to the farm by the 18th or 19th.
