I don't get it
Apr. 5th, 2006 02:19 pmThe UM Women won their first National Championship in Basketball (yes, this means that my Mom is VERY happy since she is an alum of THE University of Florida and has ties to UM as well ... 2 1st time championships in one year).
Anyway, things that I Just Don't Get
I admit that this is mostly about that last point. UM was playing Duke who is viewed as a major rival in men's basketball so I guess it carries over to women's BB as well. I can understand jumping up and down and cheering. I completely support the campus for showing the game at the campus theatre for anyone who wanted to go (for the men's game, they rented a HUGE screen TV and showed it in the field house but the women aren't as popular as the men ... even if they could probably beat them soundly this year).
What I don't get is the rioting. I can understand a bonfire but why not build it in a safe place and only burn your stuff (or things that you purchased for the fire ... like firewood or paper). With the men's games, they have built fires right under fairly low hanging power/phone/cable lines. Why is "celebratory" about throwing bricks through a window of a store? Why take a bus that helps people get around the campus and try to flip it over???? Those things are NOT cheap and are NOT designed to be on their sides. Even if no major damage is done to the bus, it will need to be pulled out of service for a full inspection and probably some major paint touch-ups. The ShuttleUM buses are cool, why hurt them? What did they do? (For those of you who may not know, the ShuttleUM program provides bus service to several areas near campus and is funded by student fees and is almost entirely student run. I think they have around 3 TOTAL employees who are not students. The students drive, wash, do basic maintenance, schedule, dispatch, etc. the buses.).
The new (4 years) coach of the team when asked by reporters what she thought would be happening on campus said something along the lines of "I hope they celebrate in a respectful manner". That is class, that is the kind of leadership we need on campus. The Men's BB team (and football team) have not had a good couple of years. I wonder how much of that is the fact that the athletes recruited look better academically because the coaches know that academics is important (and with the new NCAA rules for athletic eligibility it gets real interesting. Esp. since 1 player can really kill the average for a team of 11 people.

- Why it should even need to be asked if a display case for the trophy will be built. They didn't seem to need to ask about the men's championship
- Why it should even need to be asked if a portion of the floor would be brought to campus (again, it wasn't a question for the men
- Why the TV broadcast apparently didn't show some of the standard celebratory activities (like cutting down the net)
- Why students seem to feel that the way to celebrate a victory is to trash things?
