Vacation Day 4
May. 30th, 2005 12:50 pmScarborough Day Two
Not raining! VERY muddy. It seemed almost impossible but the mud was worse on Day Two at the faire. It was that heavy, sticky mud that clumps onto your shoe and causes it to weigh a bloody ton. C'est la vie. We saw a lot more shows (Chess Match, part of Queen Anne's Lace, part of Turtle Racing, part of Corsairs, Bard O'Reilly, Morning Country Dance, Hey Nunnie Nunnie, part of Don Juan and Miguel, and the Birds of Prey show).
An unfortunate patron asked the wrong cast member where the privy was and was made the central attraction in a very loud Privy Parade which proceeded with much pomp and circumstance to the nearest privy. We followed at a discrete distance (since that was our next stop anyway).
The Birds of Prey show was amazing. Not only were they flying the birds (which I prefer to just carrying them around) but some of the court handled the birds. One was carried in by a lady and the King himself used a lure with one of the hawks. It was very neat seeing the bird come in hooded and completely relaxed, see him start to say "oh, hunt?" when the hood was loosened but be completely relaxed about the unhooding process. They explained that when using the lure you want to make it just barely not able to catch it a few times but then let the bird catch it. The challenge is how the get the bird off its prey (or lure) when it catches it and what they did was throw something really tasty next to the lure/prey and getting the lure while the bird was busy. Then call it to the glove for another treat.
In a way I am sorry that I missed more of the dancing but in a way it is OK. I did see a really cool dance in the morning and got some info on it. I will look into how period it is and possibly teach it to Thrir Venstri Foetr (it turns out to NOT be period but still a cool dance). Some of the dances they did I am pretty sure are not period but they did them fairly well (esp. when dragging people into them). It would have been nice if the names of the dances had been announced.
Don Juan and Miguel was amusing and had some pretty good whip tricks but it was a little over the top for my tastes in the bad jokes and amusing themselves rather than the audience. I caught a song or two by the Corsairs while waiting for Java and was not overly surprised to see 2 Crimson Pirates joining them. Wow, the two groups do play (ok sing) very well together and seem to play with each other quite well (jumping on the right point and all).
We wanted to see what 'Turtle Racing' was so we went to that show (I love watching pig racing and terrier racing). What a waste of time (from my perspective). The assistant looked bored out of his skull (not that I blame him if all the shows are alike). There were some nice jokes but most of the jokes seemed to focus on people not reacting 'properly' to this guy's jokes. He did show us the turtles but 25 minutes into the 'race' they still hadn't started. The turtles were pretty enough.
We caught part of the "All Chandler's Wife" show from Queen Anne's Lace. The story (as given) is that when they were recording the song for the CD they couldn't do the clap-clap-clap in the studio so they threw in some sound effects instead. That morphed into bizarre lines from movies and the show (second annual IIRC) had each version of the show pulling lines from a single movie. Unfortunately, since I didn't know all the movies and the lines weren't as easy to understand as this fabulous group usually is.
All in all the site is beautiful and well laid out. The food I had was quite good and the prep people were nice (I ended up with cheese and a side of potato as it was announced). There were some VERY clever people working the street (we both spent a fair amount of time watching the person having tomatos thrown at him because he was so clever and fun ... almost jumping in front of the tomato while offering encouragement).
We decided to not stay for Pub Sing because we were both tired so we headed back towards the hotel.
We went to the cheap theater and saw Madagascar (which I didn't enjoy as much as I hoped I would ... probably due to being in a weird mood) and had Chinese dinner (quite good and VERY generous portions).
I really enjoyed seeing the festival and am rather bummed that I didn't see as much as I wanted due to being a little on the lame side. Some of the acts were fabulous but I now have a MUCH stronger appreciation of how well we have it here with our no-tips show.
