Barn Update

blueeowyn: (Dancer - Who Me?)
I am behind on writing up some things for LJ, but I figured I'd go ahead and do this quick update.

I WentBarn last night (with Mom). The horses are shedding (even thin-coated Echo). We took Dancer & Rooh out to graze (they approved).

In the what is going on category, Ms. Dancer who is usually the top dog in her field is now 2nd in line for the food (behind Rooh). Now Rooh is a treats hound but Dancer is a major food hound. I suspect that since Rooh REALLY likes the new feed (with soaked Beet Pulp), that when Dancer went in to help her finish her food (which I think happens) that Rooh did some 'splaining to Dancer. I had to sort of coax Dancer to the gate for her share of the goodies (rare) and keep Rooh from chasing her off. I then saw Rooh tell Dancer that BOTH hay piles were hers. So, I went and separated the piles a bit more (usually they can eat from the same pile). I guess it is a GoodThing since the two of them are scheduled to be moved to a pasture with the broodmares and Rooh needs to stand up for herself. Also, Dancer doesn't seem hurt by this at all (though she was a little stand-offish last week ... esp. on her left side).

In the bad news department, Echo is really lame. Peter described it as totally lame. Her right fetlock is VERY swollen and sore to the touch (though some of that could be the soreness of being swollen). Dede said the look of it almost made her ill. So she is now not allowed out of her stall (I wish that Dede had told Peter that so he wouldn't have told me that it was OK to take her out to groom *sigh*). She will be put on an anti-inflammatory and in support bandages. In a day or so, they will decide if it needs more help. There is a set of horses going to New Bolton in a few weeks, if she is still not doing well, she will go.

This has been going on for a year. Dede is worried about more suspensory problems than we had previously known of (esp. since her foot is clubbing a bit). I need to get her shod with a specific type of shoe (she is currently barefoot) to see if that will help (need to call Dede and see if that can be arranged with Curtis).
