http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/.a/6a00d83451c45669e20120a7a8552a970b-500wi - more states allow marriage between first cousins than allow gay marriages. Now, given that a lot of the wingnuts charming people who feel that gays should not be allowed to marry are trotting out the whole "marriage is about having children and raising them in a family environment" argument, this really bothers me. Having first cousins have children is potentially a bad idea from a genetic viewpoint and is (in my opinion) a little creepy.

I still wanna know where the whole 'gay marriage will increase abortion rates' argument comes into play. Asshats.

The genetic problem with first cousin marriages has been blown out of proportion. The risks are only slightly higher than with non-cousins, and genetic counciling. If there is a known genetic problem within the family, it can be specifically targeted for testing, but that's also true with non-cousins. Repeated inbreeding can be a problem over several generations, but singular events generally are not a real issue.
